BASCD Success and Initiatives 2017
Recent Success

Invigorating, Engaging, Enlightening and Motivating is how the recent Bahamas ASCD Conference held on February 24, 2017 in Nassau, Bahamas can be described.

  • We were fortunate to have as our keynote speaker Deb Delisle, Executive Director and CEO of ASCD International. She spoke on our conference theme “Exemplars of Education – Beyond Efficiency to Exemplary.” Deb also reminded the educators in attendance about the importance of finding the “Kia” in our classrooms – (the student that we sometimes overlook) and ignite a spark, give them a ray of hope to discover real purpose in life.

Afterwards she was truly engaged.
  • To show our support to one of the schools that was damaged by the recent hurricane, we presented a HP computer, printer and an LCD projector to the school. These items were kindly donated by Customs Computer. A representative from the school accepted on behalf of the school’s administrators.
  • We were encouraged by the increased number of educators who travelled from the various Family Islands to attend the conference. For the first time, we had student leaders from the islands and future teachers from the University of the Bahamas in attendance.
Plans for 2017
  • Some of our local educators are planning to attend Empower 17 in Anaheim California , March 25 – 27, 2017
  • Plans are already on the way for another conference to be held in October 2017.
  • We are planning to identify, inspire and invite young educators into a mentorship program to become members of Bahamas ASCD Board.
  • We also want to actively engage more future teachers and student leaders in the activities of BASCD. This was implemented at our conference held at Uriah McPhee Primary School on February 24, 2017.

On our lunch break, the students briefly visited the campus of the University of the Bahamas.

They commented.

“The conference was quite educational and informative. I agree that technology should be implemented in the classroom.” – Ozioma Scott – Head Girl

“I aspire to be a teacher .The conference was a great experience. It enlightened me about the awareness of technology for educational purposes.” – Mikayla Rolle

Initiative in Progress
  • As we address the“Tenets of the Whole Child” we hope that our current procedure for PTA Meetings would promote holistic development to ensure that the students are healthy, safe, engaged, supported and challenged.
  • Some activities that are ongoing in the schools include Internet Safety Seminars, Decision Making and Life Skills. Other exploration events to promote the various tenets of the Whole Child includes Health and Wellness Seminars and guest presenters from the community.
  • Most of the activities are challenging for the students. With the support of their parents, they can participate and become successful in their pursuit of excellence.
Upcoming Events
  • Annual conference scheduled for October 2017
  • Plans are in progress to host our Spring Conference 2018 in one of the Family Islands, perhaps Grand Bahama or Eleuthera Island.
